Boomers and Babies: Engaging a Growing Volunteer Corps to Meet Early Childhood Needs

3/20/2012 Press Release

On Thursday, March 8, 75 guests attended a panel discussion and reception at Portland’s Ecotrust building to learn about OCF’s Boomers and Babies project. A panel of five grantees spoke about the impact of Boomer volunteers on the children and families their organizations serve. After the panel presentation, all participants joined in lively small-group discussions about the possibilities and challenges they see for this work in their communities. Attendees were representatives of other Oregon foundations and nonprofits, OCF board members, and advised fund donors. During the reception OCF’s president and CEO Max Williams spoke to the guests about the importance of investing in early childhood education.

Boomers and Babies is part of the Community Experience Partnership (CEP), a national initiative of The Atlantic Philanthropies. CEP engages U.S. community foundations to tap older adults to address key community issues through volunteerism. Community foundation representatives participating in the CEP from seven other states also attended the event in Portland.
